When you think about strengthening your core, what comes to mind?

Crunches?

Planks?

More ab exercises?

Here’s what I’ve learned after more than 27 years working in rehab and fitness:

Before your core can get stronger, it first needs to feel safe.

How I Changed the Way I Think About Core Strength

When I first started my career, I looked at core strength and stability through a purely biomechanical lens.

Strengthen the muscles.

Stabilize the spine.

Improve alignment and mechanics.

But over the years, I brought what I had learned about early development, reflex integration, and nervous system regulation into my core work.

And it completely changed the way I approached strengthening.

Certain reflexes that support our spine and core develop and integrate early in life. But stress, illness, injuries, accidents, and other life experiences can trip those patterns back up.

Most traditional core exercises, especially crunches, can actually feed right back into the patterns we’re trying to move out of.

That’s why I now approach core work differently.

Your nervous system needs to recognize safety first before your body can build strength from that foundation.

Try This 4-Minute Core Sequence

In the video above, I’ll show you a short sequence you can do in about 4 minutes.

We’ll start with a simple isometric exercise designed to help establish a sense of safety and support.

Then we’ll build that into a short strengthening sequence that works your core while nourishing your nervous system at the same time.

Because the goal isn’t simply to make your muscles work harder.

We want to help your nervous system stay integrated while giving your body the support it needs to get stronger.

Safety first. Strength second.

Because your core doesn’t need more crunches.

It needs to feel safe before it can get stronger.
