Yesterday, I had the honor of presenting at my daughter’s school for their Sisterhood Summit, and it was such a beautiful experience. Moms and daughters, grandmothers, current students, and alum came together to celebrate wellness and connection, and it was incredible to see multiple generations sharing movement, breath, and laughter side by side.
What struck me most was how powerful it is when we model self-care for our daughters. They learn so much more from what we do than what we say. When they see us taking a few minutes to move, breathe, and take care of our bodies, especially when life gets busy, we’re teaching them that caring for themselves is not selfish, it’s essential.
And as the holidays approach, that message feels especially important. It’s so easy to run ourselves into the ground physically and mentally trying to create the perfect holiday for everyone else. But what if we could still take care of ourselves along the way?
After more than 25 years of working with women who struggle physically and mentally through the holiday season, I’ve seen how much stress builds up in the body, especially in the back. Between cooking, cleaning, shopping, and carrying everything from groceries to gifts, it’s no wonder so many people search for how to relieve back pain while cooking during the holidays.
The good news is you don’t need an hour or even to roll out your mat and get on the floor to make a difference. You can relieve back pain while cooking during the holidays with a simple, two-minute standing exercise.
This gentle kitchen-friendly reset re-educates one of the key muscles that connects your back and arms, the one that helps you lift, carry, and move with more ease. Activating it not only supports your back but also sends a signal to your nervous system that your body is stable and safe, helping your brain feel more focused and calm.
You can do it while you’re waiting for the water to boil or right after you pop the turkey in the oven. It’s quick, restorative, and the perfect reminder that your body deserves care too, even in the middle of the holiday hustle.
Because when we care for ourselves, we’re not just easing tension and stress. We’re showing the next generation what it looks like to honor our energy and strength, even when life gets full.
